Cultural fund-raiser named for Ground Zero

Gretchen Dykstra has been named president and chief executive of the foundation charged with raising more than $500 million for a Ground Zero memorial.Dykstra, 57, , who led the redevelopment of Times Square in the 1990s, was elected from among 12 candidates for the job with the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation whose board includes David Rockefeller, Barbara Walters, Robert De Niro, and Michael D. Eisner. She said she would start her post next month.The memorial will include a memorial center and museum component including the Freedom Center and art exhibition space for The Drawing Center. The performing arts center will be shared by the Joyce Theater, which presents dance, and the Signature Theater Company, an Off-Broadway group known for presenting works by only one playwright each season.Dykstra honed her skills for the job as president of the Times Square Business Improvement District that eliminated X-rated movie houses and pornography shops in the run-down area in the course of restoring it as an entertainment and hotel district. Most recently she has been the city's consumer affairs commissioner.
